Sunday morning seemed a little quieter, at least at first. A bleary-eyed Mr. Primm stumbled down the hallway to the bathroom, hoping a hot shower would help make up for his lack of sleep.

He opened the door and immediately snapped wide-awake. Hector was in the shower, singing an old Motown tune as he scrubbed himself vigorously with Mr. Primm’s washcloth. The room was a mess—wet towels were draped over every surface, clothes hung haphazardly from the shower rail, and toiletries were scattered everywhere.

Hector noticed Mr. Primm. “I bid you a fine good morrow, sir,” he said cheerfully, grabbing his toupee off a Styrofoam stand and popping it onto his wet head.

Mr. Primm glared at him. He marched into the room, grabbed his toothbrush and toothpaste, and headed back out again, thanking his lucky stars that the brownstone had more than one bathroom.

“If there’s any breakfast, I’ll take eggs. Any way you want to make them. But not scrambled. Or fried!” Hector called after him before launching back into his song.

Upstairs, Lyle was singing the same cheerful tune as he tidied the attic. Hector had made a mess of the place, but he didn’t mind. Lyle danced over the old floorboards, gathering clothing and the odd piece of rubbish, making the place feel homey for Hector. It was wonderful to have his old friend back—especially after thinking Hector had abandoned him forever.

Lyle couldn’t wait to see what came next.
